Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT solves problematic behaviours & gives you better choices
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (also referred to as CBT) is a talking therapy which is the result of merging the principles of Behaviour Therapy and Cognitive Therapy. It has steadily evolved since it’s introduction in the 1960s by Dr Aaron Beck and has been scientifically validated in over 400 international studies on mental health.
CBT solves problems in a structured and goal orientated way by allowing you to explore, understand, challenge and change patterns of unhelpful behaviour and negative thinking in a practical and pragmatic way.
It’s a versatile therapy which can be applied across a wide range of problems, such as improving self confidence, dealing with bereavement, treating depression and even tackling eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. These can be problems from the past, something that is happening right now, or uncertainty about the future.
Health care providers are increasingly switching from prescribing drugs (such as anti-depressants) to recommending their patient to see a CBT practitioner. Here in the UK, CBT is highly praised by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for it’s performance in treating depression.
CBT is not a replacement for counselling, it’s complimentary to it. Counselling excels at taking a broad problem, then exploring it and establishing the precise facts and the cause of the unwanted behaviours. CBT excels at changing the identified unwanted behaviours.
I’m in a unique position where I can offer you both of these therapies, and we can switch between them if we need to, seamlessly. No more being bounced back and forth between therapists and waiting for referrals. You will have the same therapist at the same venue, every time.
Meeting weekly is the most effective approach to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as this gives you the opportunity to assess your concerns and experiences on a regular basis.
Sudden termination of therapy can be counter productive and even make the problem worse, so later in the therapeutic process, appointments can be scheduled on a less frequent basis.
